I was Peace Corps ag extension agent in Senegal from 92-94, and I can
confirm that farmers there use manure (cow, horse, sheep and goat,
mostly) to improve the soil. One problem was that during the 8-9 mo.
dry season, it becomes completely dry, losing nitrogen to
NH4+ evaporation. this was especially true when it was spread in
advance of the planting time. we encouraged farmers to keep in the
stall, covered, until just before planting.
Most other Sahelian countries also used manure, I observed during my
travels in the region.
Hope this helps.
