*Organic Agriculture Conference: Organic Farming Comes
of Age, January 26-27, 1996.* Annual organic conference
at University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, will examine
organic crop and livestock production practices,
marketing of organic goods and services, and growth in
the international organic industry. Sponsored by several
Canadian farmer and educational organizations, including
Canadian Organic Growers, Organic Crop Improvement
Association (Ontario Chapter) and University of Guelph.
Registration fees: postmarked by January 12, 1996 --
Canada$35; registration at door -- Canada$45. Organic
Conference, Box 1030 Guelph, ON, N1H 6N1, Canada; phone

*Citizen's Guide to Pest Control and Pesticide Safety,
1995.* U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Lay
language overview of pest management and pesticide use
and safety, including non-chemical pest controls and
integrated pest management. Describes methods for
reducing pesticide hazards during application, storage
and disposal, provides guidelines for pesticide
poisoning identification and first aid, and suggests
practices for reducing pesticide exposure from food and
drift. Includes contact information for EPA Regional
Offices and state pesticide agencies. 49 pages. No
charge. National Center for Environmental Publications
and Information, P.O. Box 42419, Cincinnati, OH 45242;
phone (703) 305-5017; fax (703) 305-5558. The Guide is
also available online: <gopher.epa.gov> and

*International Trade in Dangerous Chemicals, 1995.*
EurEco Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies. Presents
two papers that examine management and trade of
dangerous chemicals as related to European Union (EU)
policy. Reviews international legal mechanisms regarding
trade and management of dangerous chemicals, and offers
recommendations for EU policy, including that EU
encourage transparent policy-making, strengthen
reporting mechanisms and increase international
cooperation. Points out that EU has not adequately
assisted developing countries in building capacity to
monitor and regulate chemical use, and states that such
capacity-building is necessary for international
progress in safe management of dangerous chemicals. 90
pp. European Parliament, Directorate General for
Research, Directorate A/STOA, L-2929 Luxembourg; phone
(352) 4300-2511; fax (352) 4300-2418.

*Healthy Food, Healthy Farms: Pest Management in the
Public Interest, 1995.* Charles Benbrook. Examines
yields, costs and extent of pesticide use reduction on
eight organic farms in the U.S. compared to nearby
conventional farms producing similar crops. Concludes
that "science-based" organic farming can significantly
cut production expenses, assure safe foods and clean
drinking water and achieve yields comparable to
conventional farms, but argues that successful organic
production requires sophisticated management of
biological systems, which can take years for farmers to
develop. 44 pp. US$13.70. National Campaign for
Pesticide Policy Reform, 666 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE,
Suite 200, Washington, DC 20003; phone (202) 547-9009;
fax (202) 543-0688; email ncppr@igc.apc.org.

ADJUSTMENT OF METHYL BROMIDE USE FIGURES

On January 3, 1996 PANUPS reported two methyl bromide use
figures that should be changed to the following: sixty five
million pounds of methyl bromide are used annually in the
U.S. and strawberry growers account for nearly 25% of
California's total methyl bromide use. These estimates are
more accurate than those given in the January 3 PANUPS
because they include data from the California Department of
Pesticide Regulations (DPR) "Pesticide Use Reports," which
document pesticide use by chemical and by crop.
