Position: Faculty Research Assistant, Integrated Farming Systems/Agroecology
Position Description:
This position is associated with the Integrated Farming Systems/Agroecology
program in the Department of Horticulture. The incumbent will assist in
planning and implementing research projects in vegetable and tree crops
which enhance soil and water quality, reduce reliance on nonrenewable
resources, and improve economic viability. These projects focus on
developing and evaluating integrated farming systems utilizing cover crops,
conservation tillage and biorational pest management practices. Major
duties include: 1) work with farmer/scientist research teams to plan and
implement on-farm research related to integrated farming systems in
vegetable and tree crops; 2) assist project leader in development of field,
laboratory and greenhouse experiments, including planning and maintenance
of plots, data collection and analysis; 3) present research results at
professional meetings, (4) co-author with project leader manuscripts for
Extension publications and research journals, proposals and project reports
to funding agencies; 5) work with Extension agents, Natural Resources
Conservation Service field staff and other agricultural professionals to
develop and implement in-service educational programs related to integrated
farming systems; 6) organize, publicize and facilitate educational
conferences, workshops, and field days for growers and other agricultural
professionals.
Location: This position involves on-farm research on vegetable and tree
crop operations located primarily in the Willamette Valley and Hood River
Valley of western Oregon, as well as on-station research in these areas.
The position is housed in the Dept. of Horticulture on the OSU campus in
Corvallis.
Qualifications:
The successful applicant must have an M.S. in horticulture, crop and soil
science, plant protection, or related field. Experience in conducting
agricultural field research, including experience in experimental design
and field plot technique, data collection, statistical analysis and
graphical data display. Experience working with farmers, Extension Agents,
and other agricultural professionals. Evidence of written and oral
communication skills and use of computer software for word processing, data
entry, analysis and slide preparation. Evidence of good judgment,
enthusiasm, and ability to work independently with minimum supervision and
participate as a team member. Experience working with vegetable or tree
crops is preferred. Successful applicant must be willing to obtain an
Oregon driving license and a public pesticide applicator's license.
Employment Status, Salary, and Fringe Benefits
Beginning salary is $28,008- $30,000 per year (1.0 FTE), depending on
professional qualifications. Position is non-tenure track and subject to
annual renewal based on availability of funding. Benefits include state
retirement; health, life and dental insurance group plans; annual and sick
leave.
