We wish to announce an "International Symposium on Physics, Chemistry,
and Ecology of Seasonally Frozen Soils" to be held in Fairbanks,
Alaska June 10-12, 1997. It is joinly sponsored by the USDA
Agricultural Research Service, the University of Alaska, and the Cold
Regions Research & Engineering Laboratory of the US Army.
The symposium will provide a forum for the exchange of information and
ideas in the detection and prediction of physical and biological
processes in seasonally frozen soils. Topics of specific interest are
those related to the climatology, hydrology, physics, chemistry and
biology of managed ecosystems in cold regions.
Abstracts are due by 1 April 1996. Further information or an
announcement can be obtained by contacting Brenton Sharratt, USDA-ARS,
